Welcome to the 2024-25 school year!

Welcome to the 2024-25 school year!

This message was shared with all HRCE families on September 3, 2024.

Families,

Are you ready? We are!

The 2024-25 school year is about to begin, and we are excited to welcome your child(ren) to school on Thursday, September 5.

For those who are new to the Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE), I extend my warmest welcome to you and your family as you begin your learning journey with us. For those who are returning, welcome back. It’s going to be a wonderful year!

Student enrollment continues to grow…and grow…and grow. Our enrollment will likely surpass 60,000 in the next month!

It’s going to be a very busy first few weeks as we all adjust to new routines. You may experience bus delays, especially in the early days. There may also be adjustments to classes to accommodate new registrations and meet provincial class cap guidelines by the end of September. Your patience is greatly appreciated as we gear up for another school year.

Here are a few things to know:

  • If you haven’t already, you will hear from your child(ren)’s school before the first day with school-specific information.

  • It’s important that all students have the tools they need to learn and succeed. If your child(ren) need supplies, they will be provided. Please reach out to your school for confidential support.

  • Looking for schedule information? PowerSchool reopens tomorrow (September 4).

  • Keep track of those important dates! Print and/or download the 2024-25 school calendar.

  • If your child takes the bus, please review bus stop times and locations through BusPlanner’s Parent Portal. If you have questions, contact us at transportation@hrce.ca or 902-431-4723.

  • All HRCE students in Grades 7 to 12, regardless of HRCE transportation eligibility, will receive a free Halifax Transit pass this school year. You can find a message from Halifax Transit here, and answers to common questions here. Students eligible for HRCE transportation are still able to ride the school bus. If you do not want your child to receive a pass, please connect with your principal.

  • This October, schools that include elementary school grades pre-primary to 5 will have access to the new Nova Scotia School Lunch Program. Your school may have other food programs in place throughout September. For more information, visit www.NSLunch.ca.

  • The safety and well-being of students and staff is our highest priority. I want to assure you that regional staff members are dedicated to working together with school staff, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, and you, our communities, to support a safe, caring and inclusive learning environment for all students and staff.

Questions? Reach out!

If you have questions or concerns about your child, please contact their teacher first and then, if needed, the school principal. If you require further support, please reach out to our Parent Navigators at connect@hrce.ca or 902-464-2000. Our team is ready to support you and your family.

Wishing you a wonderful start to the year!

All the Best,

Steve Gallagher
Regional Executive Director
